SUBJECT: talking to infants and toddlers
On Tuesday morning I turned on my television so that my 2 year-old son could watch Sesame Street and the previous evening's channel (Channel 4) was still on. I didn't even regard the television screen until my son kept repeating, "Fire, fire." Much to my horror, I realized the tragedies that had taken place and promptly turned off the tv and listened to the radio instead.

Because I was in a daze all day and night on Tuesday, I felt I owed my son some sort of explanation as to why I was so emotional and somewhat inattentive (from listening to the radio).

I kept my explanation very simple and said that a plane had crashed into a building and that it was a terrible thing and that I am very sad about it. Beyond that, I offered nothing else. The important thing is that I was honest with him and labeled my feelings, as I know he was most definitely picking up on my mood.
